SAN JOSE, CA – (October 1, 2019) – NBC Bay Area marks the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake with a new documentary Bay Area Revelations: Loma Prieta Earthquake, 30 Years Later airing on Sunday, October 13th at 10:00 p.m. The one hour documentary takes a look back at the damage that the devastating earthquake caused — and the stories of bravery and survival that shone through despite the destruction. The 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m. causing widespread damage and loss of life. It brought down a section of the Bay Bridge, crippled downtown Santa Cruz, and crushed the Cypress freeway in Oakland.
Loma Prieta Earthquake, 30 Years Later reflects on the stories from the survivors, first responders and unsung heroes from that day, and ways the Bay Area is working to prepare for natural disasters in the future.
“Hearing the stories of survival from the people whose lives were shaken by the Loma Prieta earthquake was moving and powerful,” said Stacy Owen, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area. “We can’t predict when the next major earthquake will strike, but we hope bringing to light those stories from 30 years ago shows how people can band together in the worst of times, and also encourages viewers to take necessary steps to make sure their families will be safe.”
The film is told primarily through the lens of survivors who share memories of the earthquake from Candlestick Park, San Francisco's Marina District, the Cypress Freeway in Oakland and downtown Santa Cruz. Interviewees include sportscaster Al Michaels, former Giants star Will Clark, along with former San Francisco mayor Art Agnos and former police chief Frank Jordan. Also, hear from Dr. James Betts, an Oakland surgeon who amputated a young boy's leg, saving his life and former firefighter Tim Petersen, who nearly died when the Cypress freeway collapsed. And, the "miracle survival" story of a family-run bookshop in Santa Cruz.
"Loma Prieta Earthquake, 30 Years Later" debuts on Sunday, October 13th at 10:00 p.m. An encore presentation airs Saturday, October 19th at 4:00 p.m. For extended interviews and web extras visit nbcbayarea.com/bayarearevelations.
